The Best Sunscreens of 2026:
Every Skin Type, Every Budget

34 sunscreens reviewed across mineral, chemical, hybrid, tinted, stick, and body formulas. From $6.89 to $70.

34 Products Reviewed 5 Formula Types Updated May 2026

Sunscreen is the most evidence-backed skincare product available. It reduces the risk of skin cancer, prevents hyperpigmentation, and protects against fine lines and photoaging. Unlike most skincare, its benefits aren't theoretical: the mechanism is direct and the research is unambiguous.

The problem is not knowing whether to use sunscreen. The problem is picking one you will actually use every day. A sunscreen that feels greasy, leaves a white cast, or breaks you out will end up abandoned in a drawer by week two. This guide covers 34 sunscreens across every major formula type, finish, skin concern, and budget so you can find one that works for how you actually look and feel.

Understanding Sunscreen Science

SPF Explained

SPF measures UVB protection only. SPF 30 blocks 97%, SPF 50 blocks 98%, SPF 70 blocks 98.5%. The jump from SPF 30 to 50 is meaningful. From 50 to 70 is marginal. SPF 30+ is the daily minimum.

UVA Protection

SPF doesn't cover UVA. UVA causes photoaging and hyperpigmentation, penetrates glass, and is present on cloudy days. US "broad spectrum" labeling confirms some UVA protection but doesn't say how much.

Mineral vs Chemical

Mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sits on skin and scatters UV. Better for sensitive skin, may leave white cast. Chemical filters absorb UV as heat. Lighter feel, no white cast, some may irritate reactive skin.

How to Apply

Use ΒΌ teaspoon for face and neck. Most people apply 25–50% too little, dramatically reducing real-world SPF. Apply after moisturizer, before primer. Reapply every 2 hours in direct sun.

PA Rating System: The UVA Scale That Actually Tells You Something

PA+ Minimal UVA protection — equivalent to PPD 2–4
PA++ Moderate UVA protection — equivalent to PPD 4–8
PA+++ High UVA protection — equivalent to PPD 8–16
PA++++ Very high UVA protection — PPD 16+ (strongest rating available)

Before You Buy

White Cast: Why It Happens

White cast comes from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sitting on the skin surface. High titanium dioxide concentrations cause the most visible cast on medium to deeper skin tones. If you have a deeper skin tone, look for pure chemical sunscreens, tinted formulas made for deeper tones, or hybrids with low zinc percentages.

About Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone has been shown as an endocrine disruptor in rat studies at high doses. No study has demonstrated harm to humans at normal sunscreen use levels. The FDA has requested more research. If you prefer to avoid it, mineral and hybrid sunscreens in this guide do not contain it.

Application Tip

Most People Apply Far Too Little

The standard is approximately one quarter teaspoon for the face and neck. Most people apply 25–50% of the recommended amount, which significantly reduces actual protection. Applying two thin layers rather than one thick layer produces better and more even coverage. This is the most common reason sunscreen appears to fail.

Every Sunscreen Reviewed

Mineral & Hybrid Sunscreens

MineralBudget Pick

The most affordable genuine mineral face sunscreen in our chart. Zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 5.5%, ceramides, and CeraVe's MVE delivery technology for sustained hydration. The ceramide complex supports the skin barrier, making this particularly useful after active skincare ingredients like retinoids or AHAs that can compromise barrier function.

The trade-off is the same as most drugstore mineral sunscreens: the dewy finish and moderate white cast mean it works better on lighter skin tones and is not the most makeup-friendly. On dry and sensitive skin as a morning moisturiser-sunscreen combination, it is strong value at the price.

Mineral

Seventeen percent zinc oxide is unusually high for a consumer mineral sunscreen and provides strong broad-spectrum coverage. Reef-safe formulation, no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Works on face and body. The 17% zinc concentration produces visible white cast, particularly on medium to deeper skin tones.

Best positioned as a body and outdoor sunscreen for sensitive skin rather than a daily under-makeup face product. The high zinc concentration makes it one of the stronger mineral options for UVA protection without additives.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

Non-nano zinc oxide at 14% in a squalane base. Reef-safe, clean beauty formulation. The squalane base produces a dewy finish that suits dry skin well. About 44% of users on medium to deeper skin tones report some white cast, making it better suited to lighter skin tones than the name's "sheer" suggests.

Contains fragrance (Lily) which some sensitive skin users may react to. Patch test recommended before committing. The clean beauty positioning and reef-safe credentials justify the $32 price for buyers who specifically prioritise ingredient sourcing.

Buy From Amazon
MineralTinted

A tinted mineral sunscreen specifically described as post-procedure safe, making it the go-to in dermatology practices after treatments like chemical peels, laser, and microneedling. Zinc oxide 6% and titanium dioxide 5%, universal tint, natural satin finish. Lightweight enough to wear comfortably over compromised skin.

The low mineral percentages mean it is more cosmetically elegant than higher-concentration mineral products, though it works better on lighter skin tones. For someone finishing a series of professional skin treatments who wants a gentle daily mineral option, this is a strong fit.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

The only powder sunscreen in our chart. Brush-on mineral powder that applies over finished makeup for midday reapplication without disturbing foundation. Zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 4%, 80-minute water resistance, reef-safe, fragrance-free.

This solves the most common daily sunscreen problem: reapplication over makeup. A lotion or gel reapplication disturbs foundation. The powder brush applies in seconds over a finished face. Note: the confirmed specification is SPF 35, not SPF 50 as some listings suggest. Check the label before purchase.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

Zinc oxide 17.42% with a small amount of titanium dioxide, matte finish, beige tint that minimises the white cast common at this zinc concentration. Pore-minimising finish. Has a mild ginger scent which is not everyone's preference. The high zinc percentage at SPF 50 makes this one of the strongest mineral sunscreens for oily and combination skin in our chart. Water resistance varies by specific variant: check the label on the product you purchase.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

Zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 8% in a fragrance-free formula. The higher titanium dioxide percentage produces visible white cast, particularly on medium to deeper skin tones. Eighty-minute water resistance. This is the sunscreen recommended for eczema-prone and highly reactive skin where chemical filters consistently cause irritation. The Australian brand has a long track record in sensitive skin. The thick texture and visible cast are the genuine trade-offs.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

The most scientifically differentiated mineral sunscreen in our chart. Zinc oxide 11% combined with DNA Repairsomes: liposome-encapsulated photolyase enzymes that actively repair UV-induced DNA damage as it occurs. Standard sunscreens prevent damage. ISDIN also repairs it, making it particularly relevant for mature skin, photodamaged skin, and rosacea-prone skin. Light enough to use daily, very low white cast for an 11% zinc product, natural radiant finish.

Buy From Amazon
Mineral

Professional skincare brand with a dermatologist-developed formula. Green tea polyphenol antioxidant complex, hyaluronic acid and squalane, oil-free, zinc oxide primary active. Large 4 fl oz size. Natural sheer finish with a very slight tint, fragrance-free, water resistant. The professional brand pedigree and large size make this a strong choice for someone building a dermatologist-approved routine.

Buy From Amazon
Hybrid

Hybrid sunscreen with 4% zinc oxide alongside octisalate and octocrylene. The low zinc percentage keeps white cast minimal while the hybrid formula provides broad-spectrum coverage. Hyaluronic acid and squalane in the base make this a moisturiser and sunscreen in one step. Dewy glowing finish. For someone who wants one morning product that handles hydration and sun protection without layering a separate moisturiser, the Eight Saints delivers cleanly.

Buy From Amazon
Hybrid

The most recommended sunscreen by dermatologists for acne-prone and sensitive skin in the US. Zinc oxide 11% alongside octinoxate in a hybrid formula with 5% niacinamide. The niacinamide addresses post-acne redness and hyperpigmentation while the zinc oxide provides anti-inflammatory support. Semi-matte finish, lightweight, minimal white cast.

The hybrid formula is lighter than pure mineral alternatives at similar zinc percentages. The $49 price is higher than drugstore alternatives but the niacinamide inclusion makes it more than a basic sunscreen for skin working through breakouts and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Buy From Amazon
Hybrid

The most anti-aging-focused sunscreen in our chart. Hybrid formula with zinc oxide plus chemical filters, Sol-IR antioxidant complex targeting infrared radiation damage alongside UV protection, and a formulation oriented toward collagen preservation. Natural to satin finish.

At $70 for a daily consumable, it requires commitment. For someone already investing in a professional anti-aging routine, the Sol-IR technology and dermatologist development make it a coherent choice. For everyone else, more affordable options provide adequate UV protection without the premium.

Chemical Face Sunscreens

Chemical

The best sunscreen for compromised or recovering skin barriers. Ceramide-3 and niacinamide alongside chemical SPF 30. Designed to repair and maintain the skin barrier rather than just protect from UV. Natural skin-like finish, no white cast. The barrier repair function makes this particularly useful during and after active skincare treatments (retinoids, acids) that temporarily increase skin sensitivity.

ChemicalK-BeautyBest Value

Korean chemical sunscreen with SPF 50+ and PA++++ rating. Velvet semi-matte finish, blue-light protection claim, no white cast. The velvet finish is the defining texture characteristic: it controls shine and leaves an almost powdery feel that oily skin users specifically seek out. At $14.29 with PA++++ and SPF 50+ it is the best value sunscreen for oily skin in our chart. The lack of water resistance limits outdoor use.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalK-Beauty

Korean chemical serum-format sunscreen with SPF 50+/PA++++. The watery serum texture produces a glass-skin dewy finish. Centella asiatica for soothing and hyaluronic acid for hydration. No white cast. For someone who struggles with the heaviness of traditional sunscreen over a full skincare routine, the SKIN1004 adds essentially no weight or texture disruption. Best on normal to dry skin.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalK-Beauty

Korean chemical sunscreen with SPF 50/PA++++ and collagen, peptides, and niacinamide. Dewy radiant finish, no white cast, makeup-friendly, fragrance-free. The skincare ingredient stack is appealing but concentrations in a sunscreen are generally too low to function as primary skincare treatments. The real reasons to buy this are the SPF 50/PA++++ protection, the dewy no-cast finish, and the affordable price.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

Chemical sunscreen with avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene in a fragrance-free formula with antioxidants. Dry-touch to dewy finish depending on application amount. Low pilling makes it compatible with most skincare routines. The antioxidant blend adds value beyond UV protection, consistent with research showing antioxidants reduce collagen damage from UV exposure. One of the stronger value propositions in the mid-range chemical category.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

Chemical sunscreen with avobenzone, homosalate, and octisalate, plus ceramides. SPF 50/PA++++, water resistant, fragrance-free, dewy finish. Available at Target. The combination of water resistance, PA++++ rating, ceramide support, and fragrance-free formula at $20 is unusual. Most sunscreens at this price compromise on one of these factors. The dewy finish suits dry and normal skin.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

The SPF 25 is the most significant limitation in our chart. The FDA recommends SPF 30 as the minimum for meaningful protection, and SPF 25 falls short. The hyaluronic acid water-gel base produces excellent hydration and a dewy finish, but this is best used as a hydrating daytime moisturiser in situations with minimal sun exposure rather than as a primary sunscreen for sun-exposed activity.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

The primer-like gel texture is what built Supergoop's reputation. Completely invisible on application, no white cast, smooth makeup base. Chemical filters, 40-minute water resistance. The gel grips the skin and creates a smooth surface that foundation adheres to better than many other sunscreens. Best for someone who has previously given up on sunscreen because of texture issues with other products.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

The most hydrating sunscreen in our chart. Thirty percent hyaluronic acid complex alongside Pentavitin for claimed 72-hour moisture retention, ceramides, and chemical SPF 45. Dewy glowing finish. For very dry skin that requires significant hydration alongside sun protection, the Water Drench provides more moisture than any other sunscreen in our chart. Not water resistant, making it a poor choice for outdoor activity but an excellent morning face treatment for dry skin types.

Tinted Sunscreens

ChemicalTintedBudget Pick

The most important product in this section. Chemical sunscreen that dries completely clear on all skin tones including deep melanin-rich skin. No white cast is the foundational promise and it delivers. Luminous finish with jojoba, cacao, and avocado oils. Eighty-minute water resistance. At $9.99 it is the most affordable sunscreen with a genuine no-cast guarantee for deeper skin tones.

Dark skin is not inherently protected from UV damage. Melanin provides approximately SPF 1.5 to 4 of natural protection, and UVA radiation causes 40 times more DNA strand breaks in darker skin than in lighter skin. One noted limitation: coconut oil in the formula may cause breakouts for acne-prone skin. Patch test before full-face use.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalTinted

Matte-finish version from the same brand. Chemical sunscreen, SPF 45, reef-safe, fragrance-free. Dries clear with no cast on deep skin tones. Functions as a makeup primer. Eighty-minute water resistance. For oily skin on deeper skin tones who want a mattifying option without cast, this fills the gap that most matte mineral sunscreens cannot.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalTintedK-Beauty

Pink tone-up serum that brightens and evens skin tone while providing SPF 50 protection. Chemical formula with iron oxides providing the tint effect. Semi-glow dewy finish. Contains fragrance. The pink tone-up tint works to neutralise dullness on lighter to medium skin tones. Not designed for deeper skin tones where the pink tint can read as ashy. Not water resistant.

Buy From Amazon
MineralTinted

100% mineral non-nano zinc oxide at 12.6% in 14 shades. NEA (National Eczema Association) seal. Dermatologist recommended. Non-comedogenic. Natural dewy finish with buildable light to medium coverage. The NEA seal confirms the product has been reviewed for ingredients that commonly trigger eczema and sensitive skin reactions. Not water resistant.

Buy From Amazon
MineralTinted

Tone-adapting tinted mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide 12%, EnviroScreen technology claiming protection against blue light, pollution, and infrared radiation. Demi-matte natural radiant finish, 40-minute water resistance, very low white cast. The tone-adapting tint adjusts to lighter and medium skin tones but shows as slightly grey-white on deeper tones. Best for lighter to medium skin tones who want a premium tinted mineral option.

Buy From Amazon
MineralTinted

The best tinted sunscreen in our chart for most people. Non-nano zinc oxide 12% in 30 shades covering light to very deep skin tones. Serum-tint texture with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and squalane. Dewy sheer coverage that evens skin tone without hiding it. No white cast in matched shades. Clean beauty formulation. The 30-shade range is the widest of any tinted sunscreen in our chart and the reason this product has crossover appeal across all skin tones.

Stick & Reapplication Sunscreens

ChemicalK-Beauty

Korean chemical sunstick with SPF 50+/PA++++. Semi-matte clear application with very low pilling. Eighty-minute water resistance makes it one of the few sticks with meaningful outdoor water resistance. At $16 with PA++++ and 80-minute water resistance, this is exceptional value for the reapplication category. Best for oily and combination skin who need midday reapplication that won't add shine.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

Dry oil stick that applies as a dewy glow on dry and normal skin. SPF 50/PA++++, no white cast, 40-minute water resistance. The dry oil format provides the glow of an oil without the heaviness, making midday reapplication feel like a skin prep step. The dewy finish is not suitable for oily skin reapplication. At $30 it is priced as a premium reapplication product.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalK-Beauty

Korean chemical sunstick with SPF 50+/PA++++. Matte powdery finish with pore-blurring effect. About 47% of users report noticeable cast on deeper skin tones. Contains fragrance, which limits tolerability for sensitive skin. Low pilling on application is a practical advantage for use over makeup. Best suited to oily skin on lighter to medium skin tones who want the most mattifying reapplication stick.

Body & High-SPF Sunscreens

Chemical

Chemical body lotion sunscreen with SPF 50 and 80-minute water resistance. Moisturising formula that absorbs without the greasy residue common in dedicated sunscreen body products. The lotion texture doubles as a body moisturiser, eliminating the need to apply a separate moisturiser and then sunscreen on body skin. Best for daily body sunscreen use where an easy-to-apply lotion and moisture retention are as important as the SPF number.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalBest Value

The best value sunscreen in our chart. SPF 70 with Helioplex chemistry, matte dry-touch finish, 80-minute water resistance. At $6.89 it costs less than a coffee and provides higher SPF than products at five times the price.

The real advantage of SPF 70 is the buffer it provides against underapplication: if you use less than the recommended amount (which most people do), SPF 70 lands closer to adequate protection than SPF 50 would under the same conditions. The default recommendation for budget-conscious buyers who simply want effective sunscreen.

Buy From Amazon
Chemical

Chemical sunscreen with prebiotic oat complex for soothing sensitive body skin. SPF 60, 80-minute water resistance, natural hydrated finish. Best positioned as a body sunscreen for sensitive skin that reacts to the fragrances and alcohol common in many drugstore body sunscreens. The SPF 60 is higher than most body sunscreens at this price point.

Buy From Amazon
ChemicalBest Value

The best outdoor activity sunscreen in our chart for value. SPF 70, Helioplex chemistry, 80-minute water resistance, available everywhere. For a day at the beach, pool, or outdoor sporting event, the Beach Defense covers the core requirements: high SPF, long water resistance, widely available for reapplication purchase if you run out. At $8.29 it is the most practical outdoor sunscreen in our chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

UVA radiation penetrates glass and is present on cloudy days. If you sit near a window, UVA exposure is ongoing. For truly indoor days away from windows, daily sunscreen is less critical. For most people working near windows or making any outdoor trips, daily morning sunscreen is the right habit.
Yes, but the gap is smaller than the numbers suggest. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB and SPF 50 blocks 98%. The real-world advantage of SPF 50 is the buffer it provides against underapplication: if you use half the recommended amount of SPF 50, you are still getting approximately SPF 25 level protection. The same underapplication of SPF 30 gets you to around SPF 15. Higher SPF protects against your own application inconsistency.
Oxybenzone has been shown to be an endocrine disruptor in rat studies at high doses. No study has demonstrated harm to humans at normal sunscreen use levels. The FDA has asked for more research on certain chemical filters including oxybenzone. If you prefer to avoid it, mineral and hybrid mineral sunscreens in our chart do not contain it. If you don't have a specific concern, chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone are considered safe by current regulatory standards.
In theory yes, but in practice the effect is minimal. Studies in Australia show that sunscreen users do not develop vitamin D deficiency because most people do not apply sunscreen to their entire body and sun exposure on uncovered areas continues. If you are concerned about vitamin D, supplementation is more reliable than avoiding sunscreen.
PA++++ is the highest UVA protection rating in the Japanese classification system. US sunscreens labelled "broad spectrum" have passed a UVA test but the label tells you nothing about how much UVA protection the product provides. PA++++ confirms very high UVA protection, equivalent to a PPD of 16 or higher. For complete daily protection, especially if you are concerned about photoaging and hyperpigmentation which are primarily UVA-driven, PA++++ is the most informative UVA rating on the label.
Approximately one quarter teaspoon for the face and neck. Most people apply 25 to 50% of the recommended amount, which significantly reduces actual protection. Applying two thin layers rather than one thick layer often produces better and more even coverage. This is the most common reason sunscreen appears to fail.
Yes, based on current evidence. The FDA is seeking additional safety data on certain chemical filters but has not concluded they are unsafe. Chemical sunscreens have been used daily by millions of people for decades without demonstrated harm. For sensitive skin that reacts to chemical filters specifically, mineral and hybrid options are a practical alternative.
